In a survey conducted by Opinion Research Corporation's CARAVAN poll, information about consumer products found in American homes were gathered. The results are below:
mobile phones (67 percent of people)
digital cameras (47 percent of households)
video game consoles (38 percent of households)
TiVo or similar digital video recording equipment (27 percent of households)
iPods or similar digital music players (17 percent of people).
The estimated population of the United States is: 312,000,000
The estimated amount of households in the United States is: 114,825,428
The estimated kW annual use for the devices above is as follows:
mobile phones: 70
digital cameras: 40
video game consoles: 150
TiVo or similar digital video recording equipment: 75
iPods or similar digital music players: 55
Now after we do the necessary conversions and the math to figure out how much total energy each device uses we get the following energy use:
mobile phones: 3.1 kWh/day/person
digital cameras: .37 kWh/day/person
video game consoles: 1.37 kWh/day/person
TiVo or similar digital video recording equipment: .49 kWh/day/person
iPods or similar digital music players: .62 kWh/day/person
This gives us a grand total of 5.95 kWh/day/person
