In 2003, the U.S shipping 700 billion t-mi of freight (RITA), divided into the population this comes to 2300 t-mi per person.  McKay says 1 t-km = 1 kWh/person/day and 1.5 t-km = 1 t-mi so

(2300 t-mi *(1.5))/365 days = 9.45 kWh/person/day
